It’s the first day of December. NaNoWriMo is over for another year. Now we can all relax a little.
Monday was a lot busier than I’d hoped, and I got very little writing done (though I still managed a small effort). I went into the final day behind schedule – so on Tuesday I pushed harder for the final stretch.
My final total – 50,648 words. SUCCESS!
Observations and thoughts:
- These are always immense fun, but I don’t think I could sustain this pace all the time. Not while I’m also holding down a job and a relationship, anyway.
- Momentum is more important than productivity. You’ll have good days and bad days; it’s essential to keep going even through the heaviest ones. You can always catch up later.
- It’s good to have a target to aim for. A general “do some writing” goal is too vague.
- I’m not finished on this project. I’ve not even finished the current chapter! I will definitely be continuing… at a more gentle pace.
- It’s amazing how much better my writing is than I think it will be. It helps to just get out of the way of yourself and get on with it. Sure, it’ll need a rewrite or two. But the bones of it are quite strong, and the format of this project will make rewriting it a lot less painful than a traditional novel.
- I need more tea.
Until next year, NaNoWriMo. I’d be delighted to go again. But eleven months should be enough time to rest…
