NaNoWriMo – Day One

It’s finally here. November 1st, and the start of another NaNoWriMo. Am I ready? Can I do this?

I don’t know. I’m just doing the only thing I can – taking it one day at a time.

Ideally I’d be starting this project with a nice, empty day. No distractions, no other priorities – just me, at least one mug of tea, and my hands on the keyboard. Instead, I had work. And a decorator in the house. And a chaotic rush this morning as my partner was running late. And the bins to go out…

Despite all this, I’ve managed to exceed my target for the day. 1705 words written! Just 48,295 to go…

Findings so far:

  • Early morning writing doesn’t work so well for me. I can manage a little, but I’m not awake enough for it and I’m too distracted by work. Afternoons, after work, are better – but I need a break from the computer first.
  • I don’t think it’s particularly good. It’s technically fine, but it’s all setting up the characters. Nothing is really happening so far. Tomorrow I should start hitting some action scenes, and I’m looking forward to that.
  • It’s a VERY good idea to keep notes. Before I started, I had a list of my main characters and their names and relationships. Now they’ve started developing more details – descriptions, even addresses – and it helps being able to look those up quickly.

Another week of writing lies ahead. I wonder whether I’ll still be on track for day eight?
